Mandu in 90 minutes: the perfect weekend drive from Indore
Stone ruins, mango groves, and one of the best monsoon drives in Central India. Everything you need to know before you point the car at Mandu for the weekend.

Mandu sits 95 kilometres south of Indore, perched on a Vindhya plateau that looks completely unreal in the monsoon. The drive itself is most of the joy — NH-47 takes you through Dhar, then a long climb past mango groves to the plateau top. Total driving time: about 90 minutes if you don't stop, four hours if you do (you should).
When to go
The monsoon (July to September) is when Mandu looks the way the postcards promise — green hills, mist between the ruins, waterfalls along the Patalpani route if you take that detour. The downside: the road from Dhar to Mandu has a few rough stretches that get muddy. A sedan handles it; an SUV is more comfortable.
October to February is the other good window. Cooler air, fewer tourists. Avoid March to June — the plateau gets brutally hot and you'll be hiding inside Jahaz Mahal by 11 AM.
What to see (in this order)
- Jahaz Mahal — the "ship palace", flanked by two lakes. Go early before the tour buses.
- Hindola Mahal — sloped walls that make it look like it's about to tip over.
- Rupmati's Pavilion — sunset spot. Wait for the light to drop behind the Narmada valley.
- Roopayan / Baz Bahadur's Palace — quieter, fewer tourists, free entry.
What to bring
- Driving licence and original Aadhaar (don't forget these — they're checked at our pickup)
- ₹150-200 cash for monument tickets
- Water and snacks (the food on the plateau is decent but limited)
- A light jacket if you're going in October-February
A tip nobody mentions
The Mandu fort has multiple entry points but ASI sells a single combined ticket. Buy it at Jahaz Mahal and you don't need to buy again at the other sites.
The cleanest weekend itinerary: leave Indore Saturday morning at 7 AM, reach Mandu by 9, see the monuments before lunch, eat at one of the small dhabas near the entrance, nap, do Rupmati's at sunset, drive back Sunday morning after breakfast. 24 hours, total spend under ₹4000 for a couple.
